Samadhi is not a goal in this book, and you certainly won’t be asked to go vegan or swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. But to throw another “yoga is” in the mix, yoga is the pursuit of yoga, just as magic is often the pursuit of the magical. It’s all a journey, and it can be no more and no less than what you make of it. The ethics of yama and niyama do provide a pretty good framework for a way of life, and the internal stages of pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and even samadhi all fall under the umbrella of what today we call simply “meditation.” If you want to tighten that booty and work off a little stress with some yoga, then roll out that mat—you’ll be more flexible, stronger, and have better posture and balance. If you want to throw in some breath work to support your stretches and strength training, even better, as it will give you more energy, lower your blood pressure, and help you relax. If you want to add in some meditation, then, according to science, you’ll experience reduced stress and anxiety, improvements in mood and optimism, greater self-awareness, greater attention span, reduced memory loss, and better sleep. And if you do all of that and live life like a good human, you’re following Patanjali’s eight limbs of yoga.
